Move and Flu – the twin reasons for silence
[No technical content in this post]
After the SPC 2009 week, time just seems to have zipped by, with zero blog entries (and I certainly wish blog entries were the only thing “zero” is the appropriate achievement descriptor for). Why is that?
Two main reasons:
First, we moved. Not a big deal per se, but moving from an urban flat to a house reasonably far away from the city… Well, that takes preparation. As I look out from the window, I see the view on the right. First snow has come, but guess have we purchased a shovel yet? Right…
Second, I got a flu. Luckily, it doesn’t seem to be the H1N1 thingy, but nonetheless, I’ve been home sick. And while I love the new house, I’d be quite happy to visit the office for a change.
On commuting
For over five years, I had the luxury of living very close to the office. It took me 8 minutes by car, 20 minutes by bus or bike and about an hour of walking to get there. Now, the equivalent figures are 40 minutes by car, 1 hour 20 minutes by bus, 2 hours by bike or 5 hours of walking.
Given the figures, one might expect there to be a reasonable desire to take the car. But I’ll resist and only use it as the last resort. Although the bus trip is ridiculously long, it is also very effective: Most of the time is spent in a single, comfortable long-distance bus that allows me to catch up with email, RSS feeds and whatnot before I hit the office. So, at least for now, the time consumption isn’t scaring me off. Let’s see if the bus trips result in some useful learning time as well.
On near future
A week and a couple of days from now, I’ll be off flying to Los Angeles for PDC 2009. While my session schedule planning is far from complete (no surprise there), it’ll be Windows Azure and Information Worker apps I’ll be focusing on. Until new technologies get launched at the keynote, and the session lists suddenly shuffle, that is…
Before that, there’s a ridiculous pile of work to be done. Hope things will smoothen out soon!
